Pile of gaming shame

My sister-in-law, Yetichan, often bemoans her pile of shame (and talks about it in the previous post), and I secretly think I’m better than her because I never let a game go unfinished.  I always force myself to complete them.  Or so I had convinced myself…

I just consulted my games database and to my horror, my pile of gaming shame is quite atrocious.  Far worse than Yetichan’s!  Here it is in alphabetical order, with my grand excuses as to why it remains uncompleted:

3D Lemmings (PS1) – “what a frustrating game!”  As I recall, it had terrible camera control and was not overly engaging

Alias (PS2) – “20/7/08 Thought I’d start playing this tonight. It’s really hard, and the AI is a bit shit. :(” I never picked it up again. I think this is one of the first games my husband convinced me it was okay not to play.  Bad husband!

Azure Dreams (GBC) – “15/3/06 sorry, am I missing something? This is a SHIT game, don’t know if I can be bothered playing. It’s certainly gone off my PSX want list!” – Truly this is one of the shittest games I have ever played, I don’t know why it was in such demand on eBay at the time!

Looks pretty good, right? Don’t believe the LIE!

Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadows of Amn (and Throne of Bhaal expansion) (PC) – “Will probably have to restart as it’s been ages since I played” – I reckon I made this note to myself in about 2004.  I love the Baldur’s Gate games – love love love – but I got stuck somewhere after fighting a red dragon and put it aside for a bit.  I never went back to it, but, like Planescape: Torment and Icewind Dale, I think of it often in a yearning manner.

Bomberman (DS) – “10/1/09 Beat the boss last night, am now at area 7-5 but keep repeating. Have to look up the reason.” I think I looked it up, but then I didn’t go back to playing it!

Bomberman World (PS1) – “In progress – I suck. Currently stuck on the second boss. Level 2-4” – I suck.  Enough said.

Bust-a-Move 2 (PS1) – “In progress – will I ever complete the 1P Normal game?” Clearly not.

Crash Bandicoot (PS1) – “In progress – gah! Horrible Ripper Roo!” Must learn to use cheats to finish these games!

Croc: Legend of the Gobbos (PS1) – “In progress – I will never be able to do that sheep bit…” And I never did.

Croc 2 (PS1) – “Probably more frustrating than the first one.” I didn’t finish that either.

Dig Dug Digging Strike (DS) – “25/1/08 Thought I’d try this out but it’s definitely a husband game :)” He never played it either.

Dissidia: Final Fantasy (PSP) – “25/8/10 Started playing. Extremely hard!” And so I convinced myself not to play it any more.

Etrian Odyssey (DS) – “22/4/12 Have tried to like it, but I just don’t. The whole game seems to be about cartography, which whilst interesting, does not really seem a good concept for a game! Also, it is quite hard – I think a cheat is inorder.” I haven’t looked for one yet.

Never mind the monster, draw your own maps, fun for NO ONE!

Excalibur (PS1) – “I got all the way to the end and then got stuck. Ended up selling this during my poor days. But now I have it back :)” And yet, I have never played it since those days.

EyeToy: Monkey Mania (PS2) – “13/11/05 Started playing last night – very weird! Some of the mini games are hard. Beat the first level.” But no other levels because I didn’t play it again.

Final Fantasy Anthology (FFIV & FFV) (PS1) – “FFV – 15/8/10 This game is too annoying to play – so hard! I have been grinding for ages and still can’t beat even one of Shiva’s ice soldiers. Such crap!” I think I put it aside hoping for a cheat one day.  Yes, I gave up on a Final Fantasy game.  I should really turn in my controllers for good.

Final Fantasy Origins (FFI &FFII) (PS1) – “31/8/08 Thankfully I can ditch this for the PSP version which is much nicer!” Actually, I did finish it on PSP so I can technically remove this from the pile of gaming shame.

Final Fantasy VII (PS1) – “In progress – I really only have to fight Sephiroth. Can’t be bothered going after all the bloody mana things, and the big Weapons etc etc. A poor days repurchase (still had my save!)” Sadly somewhere along the way I deleted that save and now I have to play the whole thing over.  But that’s not so bad as it is my most favourite game of all time.

Bye bye, Aerith. I didn’t care! Cloud and Tifa all the way!

Gex 3D: Enter the Gecko (PS1) – “Another frustrating levels/worlds game. Love those one-liners tho!” Not enough to load it up and play it again though.

Gran Turismo (PS1) – “I suck at these but they are still good.” Not good enough for me to try to suck less.

Harvest Moon (DS) – “11/5/08 Muffy at yellow heart, Flora at purple. Rescued 60 sprites (now 61 inc Baby) and released the Harvest Goddess.” After a couple of months of playing I realise that Harvest Moon games are less fun than actual work and I decided to get my life back and never play a Harvest Moon game ever again despite them being hugely popular and sought after. PS I have two other Harvest Moon games on other platforms…
Icewind Dale (and Heart of Winter expansion) (PC)- “Reinstalled today (12/7/05) and started over. Let’s really finish it this time LOL” – I didn’t.  I have played this so many times, and I never finish it.  I get to a difficult part (chapter 6 I think?) and then I let so much time go by that I forget where I was up to and just start over again.  And again.

Kula World (PS) – “13/7/08 Up to level 56 now.” There are 100 levels.  This really is an amazing game and worth lots of money (well it used to be, not sure about now).  I yearn to play it some more!  It was a very unique concept and quite addictive.

Little King’s Story (Wii) – “30/6/09 This game is hard 🙁 I am trying to beat the Mushroom Forest guardian and it keeps killing me!” I love this game so much but man it is SO HARD.  But we have a modded Wii now so one day I will cheat the hell out of it!

Do not let the cutesy characters fool you, this is one of the most difficult kingdom management battle sims in the entire world.

Lomax (PS1) – “Getting hard!” So hard I didn’t want to play it ever again.

Micro Machines V3 (PS1) – “In progress – “let’s race them cars” LOL” I used to play this as a party game a lot and that was always fun.  Single player was not.  Which is why I haven’t ever completed it!

Pandemonium 2 (PS1) – “In progress – see above!” Um… I can’t be bothered looking up what this means.

Parappa the Rapper (PS1) – “8/10/05 Update – horribly difficult :(” Sadly a pattern is forming.  PS1 games are way too hard for me!

Planescape Torment (PC) – “Will have to restart this one day”.  I never did.  But I think about it often!  I got up to very close to the end and then inexplicably stopped playing.  Why do I do this?

Torment is an absolutely epic D&D classic. Did you know that Mitch Pileggi voiced Dak’kon the githyanki? How awesome is that!

Pokemon Gold (GBC) – “Started a couple of months back (around July) will need to restart” This was several years ago.  It was part of my plan to start from the very beginning in my ultimate quest to catch ’em all.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Blue Rescue Team (DS) – “5/7/07 Concluded that this game wasn’t designed very well with the whole needing to complete an entire dungeon before you can save, and the fact that you can only catch a maximum of 3 (realistically, only 1) new pokemon at a time. I will shelve this and play it every now and then.” No I won’t. But I will buy every other Mystery Dungeon game for my collection but never play them.

Pokemon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire (GBA) – “Have been playing on and off since I got it.” This was true about 5 years ago.

Pokemon Ruby (GBA) – “Got stuck 🙁 Can’t beat Stephen! – will have to go back and train them up some more” I didn’t.  I transferred all my pokemon to LeafGreen instead.  And didn’t finish that either.  But I don’t include it here because I did actually complete the story – I just didn’t catch all the pokemon and isn’t that the point of the game?

Pokemon White (DS) – I didn’t even write any notes because technically I have only played this game in order to collect rare Pokemon at events.  I have to finish Pokemon SoulSilver first.  Which should also be on this list but has dropped off my filter somehow.  Oh well….

Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness (GC) – No notes, but I got to the shadow tower or something and it got too hard.  Which sucks because this is actually a pretty awesome Pokemon game.  Dark Pokemon are cool.

Every pokemon is as scary as Haunter in Gale of Darkness. Oh, and you start out with a pet Espeon and a pet Umbreon. Naawww!

Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor (PC) – “Prolly need to restart *sigh*” Erm, yes. Like every PC game on this list.

The Sims 2: Apartment Pets (DS) – This was so bad I didn’t say anything.

The Sims Medieval (and Pirates and Nobles expansion) (PC) – technically I’ve only looked at this once, so it’s not really a fair inclusion on this list.

Sonic and the Secret Rings (Wii) – “12/2/09 Decided to give this a crack tonight. Voice acting is atrocious, and 80s hair metal music is completely dissonant from the story. Which by the way is kind of crap. And forgive me, but I can’t get into believing in Sonic as a hero. He’s a cartoon blue hedgehog. I mean, really. Despite my reservations, I persevered through the tutorial levels and did the first mission. It was pretty fun I guess. Can’t see me desperately wanting to completely beat this game though. Might just play through it and see how I go.” That’s some strong feeling right there, and good dedication. But I ended up putting it back on the shelf and never looking back (till today).

Sonic the Hedgehog (PS3) – “3/1/08 I see why people don’t review this so well – the first level is sooo frustrating with loading screens every few seconds!” And general shitness ensued.

Spyro the Dragon (PS1) – “In progress – hate hate hate! I’m stuck on Beast Maker’s World, Tree Tops.” The hate continued.  I restrained myself from collecting Spyro games after about the 4th one, even though the franchise completionist in me struggled with this decision.

Oh hai, I’m Spyro, an obnoxious arsehole who can’t fly or run very well and will piss you off with my poor controls and precociousness!

Sword of Mana (GBA) – “Gah! Will have to start over I think – got stuck at the end” I won’t mind.  It is an awesome game.

Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness (PS2) – “9/2/12 Chucked an Action Replay disc in and loaded up infinite health and moon jump. Much better experience now!!” (see also my post on the subject). But I found other games more fun, and for some reason I don’t like playing in the games room as much as the lounge!  That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it.

Viva Pinata (Xbox 360) – “17/10/11 Started playing a couple of weeks back, doing quite well, I have the best gardener title you can get. Still lots to do! Focusing on variants and master romancing at the moment.” I got bored because it was too similar to the DS game and I had played that sort of recently.  Well a few years ago.  That’s recent right?  It is when you are old!

Plus various other games that don’t really have an end per se, but I have some kind of warped idea of completing them (like every Sims game, various fighting games, quizzes and party games etc).

And probably some that I have missed along the way.

So there you have it.  That’s pretty bad isn’t it.  I feel ashamed.  I better go play some of these and redeem myself.  Or maybe I’ll just get back to Enchanted Arms, Quest Trio and Super Pokemon Rumble.  Best not to ADD to the list right?

  1. What are your parameters for counting something as ‘pile of shame’, as opposed to ‘finish later’? And as I mentioned on FB, I don’t think it should count as pile of shame if the game sucks instead of you sucking. Thats why Heavenly Sword and Arkham Asylum are on my list, they are great games, but I had no reason for stopping.

  2. Sadly, my parameters are anything I haven’t finished, crap or otherwise. I’m such a completionist, even the bad ones fill me with guilt!

  3. BTW, I think I’d like to work my way through these one day – I sometimes entertain thoughts of playing a “pile of shame” game in between new ones. It usually doesn’t eventuate.

  4. Dissidia was very hard to get into but was reasonably satisfying when i got into it. My only issue with the game is that is was too long as you needed to repeat each character at least three times to level up and to try and get everything. Even when you think you have finished the game it keeps throwing levels at you!

    • Absolutely, Redwolf – now that I think about it, I had gotten through quite a few of the characters stories, and just tired of it. I might crank it up some time soon to check where I actually got to. All I know is that I didn’t want to get the sequel, which is rarity for me as I’m pretty obsessed with the Final Fantasy franchise!
