This month was a great month for Zelda fans (like me!) with the release of the new limited edition Zelda-themed gold 3DS XL, and new installment in the franchise, A Link Between Worlds.
I’ve been thinking about upgrading to a 3DS XL for a while now (due to peer pressure mostly as all my gaming buds have one), but I’d been hesitant as there just wasn’t a limited edition one that was doing it for me. Except the gold Pokemon one that was released in Japan, that is.
So when the Zelda 3DS XL was announced, I figured it was time. I was still a little uncertain, as I already had a Zelda-themed 3DS and sort of wanted a different theme; I also really love my Zelda 3DS, and I was worried that the XL would be too huge for my tiny lady hands. But I bowed to peer pressure and opted to buy it from EB Games. I preordered it early on, which, as it turns out, was fortunate, given the controversial supply and demand debacle…
Despite the fact that it would come with a download code for A Link Between Worlds, I reallllly wanted to get the preorder bonus musical chest that came with the EB Games hard copy release. So I preordered that too. Luckily, I avoided missing out on what was a very popular preorder bonus!
Now those who follow my Facebook page would know that I’ve had some troubles at my local EB Games due to a, shall we say, somewhat dictatorial sales person who is both rude and patronising. So it was with great trepidation that I approached my local store on Saturday to pick up my preorders. Thankfully my complaints to management appear to have been heeded and passed on, because our villain was there and acted considerably reformed, even complimenting me on my Zelda-themed ensemble and offering me the musical chest with enthusiasm. So that was a relief, I tell you!
I managed to do the system transfer between my old 3DS and my new XL with nary a hiccup, which was good given the amount of hours I’ve loaded into Streetpass (it’s my highest ranked title in my software library, even beating out Animal Crossing New Leaf by some 100 hours!)
So now I am the proud owner of a 3DS XL that is different to what my friends have, and after a few days of playing I’m getting used to the giant size of it. I still need a screen protector and carry case though. I’d like a black or gold one. Any ideas where I can get a nice one because I’m not having heaps of luck?!
In the meantime though, I haven’t even looked at A Link Between Worlds (although I did play it for a bit at PAX Australia earlier this year, and it looks amazing). I am tempted to burn through A Link to the Past before I play it, which shouldn’t be too hard, providing I actually have it…. *consults GameCollector app* Oh yes, there we go, I have it on GBA teamed with Four Swords. Oh I have an official strategy guide too apparently 🙂 Sweet.
I am really revelling in my love of Zelda at the moment. Since finishing Pikmin 3 earlier this month, I immediately jumped into the WiiU’s HD remake of Windwaker. I am enjoying it so much – especially all the sailing, treasure hunting, and pictograph quests. So much fun! I’m actually not that far progressed in the game, story wise (I have all 3 pearls and have placed 2 of them), but I’ve clocked a LOT of time on side missions. I am certainly getting my money’s worth!
I am still holding out hope for a new Zelda that is more like Twilight Princess, which is my favourite Zelda game, and ranks in my top 5 games of all time. I’ve also heard rumours of a Majora’s Mask remake for 3DS, which would be great, as I haven’t played that one yet.
What’s your favourite Zelda game and why?
