2015 Year in Review and 2016 New Year’s Gaming Resolutions

Happy new year, gamers! I hope the holiday season treated you kindly, and you got to play plenty of games! I got a big swag of new games for Christmas, but I’ve been so addicted to Pokemon Picross and New Style Boutique 2, that I haven’t even loaded them up for a look. Hopefully I’ll get on to that next week when I’ve settled down from the festivities of the past couple of weeks.

In 2015, I completed nearly 40 games, including a few off my nostalgia replay wishlist, which I’m really pleased about. I didn’t get to finish my Final Fantasy VII replay, but I will get to that probably by the end of this month, given I’ve decided to just push through to the end rather than faff around trying to get all the master materia. I definitely intend to knock over a couple more nostalgia replays this year too.

I reviewed a bunch of games for n3rdabl3.co.uk through the year, and learned a lot about writing and editing. Later in the year, my husband and I popped along to our local annual arcade and pinball meet, which is becoming a real tradition; and we also attended PAX for the third year running, this time going for a pure non-cosplay experience, which was much more relaxing.  And we booked flights to go back to Japan again in May this year!

Out of the many games I played and finished in 2015, the highlights for me were Dragon Age: Inquisition and its subsequent DLC, Bayonetta 2, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D, The Order: 1886, and Hatoful Boyfriend. Sadly, the biggest disappointment was Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer (Amiibo Festival was redeemed due to the Island Escape mini game). I collected two complete series of the Animal Crossing cards, but I’m not sure if I will buy the rest. My completionism may not allow that though…

Now, on to my gaming resolutions. Last year I planned to play the Mass Effect franchise, replay FFVII, replay Suikoden or Golden Sun, and replay Baldur’s Gate or Icewind Dale. I didn’t get round to the Mass Effect games unfortunately, so that’s definitely on the list for this year. I did manage to replay FFVII as mentioned (well, I’m nearly finished anyway), and I completed Icewind Dale. I would like to add Suikoden to the list this year, and to replay the original Baldur’s Gate.  I am also extremely keen to play Xenoblade Chronicles because I have it on the Wii AND the 3DS now. With the new one just come out (I got it for Christmas), the pressure is on!  So I’ll add the 3DS version to my resolutions also. And I would like a look at the Devil May Cry franchise. And LA Noire. And Watch Dogs. And, you know, everything.

How was 2015 for you, game-wise? Any big stand outs for you? What are you hoping to play in 2016?

  1. You know of my resolution to complete the Arkham Trilogy 🙂 I also need to complete Witcher 3 (I feel I\\\’ve barely scratched the surface still!)

Just consulted my 2015 completed list – some of the games that really impressed me included Valiant Hearts, Her Story, and Life is Strange. I like that episodic story games are a thing now, makes games into digestible chunks. I was also surprised at how much I loved Telltale\\\’s Tales from the Borderlands – though it was new to me, I loved the characters and their banter. Can\\\’t wait until their Gotham series!

And lastly, welcome to the club with Mass Effect – it was amongst my gaming resolutions one year, and when I failed to achieve it I ended up doing it the following year. Good luck for getting it in this years completed list!

  2. I also want to play some of the ones you’ve mentioned. It’s a huge struggle finding the time, and I’ve not even worked full time for a few years!
