It’s always good to try something new

Hi everyone!  Sorry for being so slack and not posting anything since LAST YEAR!  No excuses here!

Lately I’ve been working my way through my favourite franchises in an effort to get up to date with them (namely Final Fantasy, Tomb Raider, Assassin’s Creed, and The Legend of Zelda).  Having recently finished Tomb Raider: Underworld, it occurred to me that I was neglecting standalone games or other franchises – which further lead me to reflect on some of the games and franchises I have played in the past that I just wasn’t confident would be any good.  I either got given them as a gift, or someone told me to play them, or I picked them up cheap at a sale just because.  I wasn’t expecting big things, but they turned out to be surprisingly awesome.

Best $9 I ever spent! Hugely entertaining and not sleazy like the cover makes out LOL!

And while there are many games on that list, the biggest one for me was…

Dragon Quest

Yes, I know, it’s been around for ages and has heaps of titles and how the hell did I not know about it?!

One year, for my birthday, my now husband bought me my first Dragon Quest game: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors.  I’d never played any of the Dragon Quest series, despite them being wildly popular in Japan (apparently there was a musical theatre show!), but hub did his research and was confident I’d like it.

And like it I did!  I found the art style to be really appealing, as well as the humour and story.  Another thing I really liked, which up till then was lacking in the Final Fantasy games I’d played, was the ability to AVOID enemies because you could see them up ahead on the path and could go round them.  That was pretty mindblowing for me!

So after working my way through that first Dragon Quest game, I played more and now have a great love for the franchise.  I particularly enjoyed the Rocket Slime spinoff, and I just picked up Monsters Joker 2 at the local game store for just $12 brand new, so there’s plenty of love left to share around.

I’m also looking forward to buying some slimes when I head to Japan next month!

ALLLLL the Slimes!

ALLLLL the Slimes!

Have you had an experience like mine with the Dragon Quest franchise?  What games have surprised you? Do you have any game suggestions for me to try?
